Title: Registered mail

Process from the acceptance to delivery of postal items is recorded, and the amount of actual damage is compensated as a general rule within the declared amount of insured value should the postal items (excluding Yu-Pack parcels) are damaged or unsent. As a general rule, the amount of actual damage is compensated within the declared amount of insured value.

Types of registered mail

Ordinary registered mail

Process from acceptance to delivery is recorded, and the amount of actual damage is compensated as a general rule within the declared amount of insured value should the postal items are damaged or unsent.

Currency registration

This is ordinary registered mail exclusively used for sending cash. Because the size of the exclusive envelope can contain a ceremonial envelope, it can be used also for sending congratulatory gifts of money.

Simplified registration

The postage is lower compared to ordinary registered mail. The amount of compensation is the amount of actual damage up to 50,000 yen as a general rule.

  • As for simplified registration, only the acceptance and delivery are recorded.

Redelivery on the same day


Registered mail that could not be delivered during daytime due to absence can be redelivered before about 21:00 if requested by phone by around 19:00 on the same day (*) (free of charge).

  • The hours of accepting request by phone may differ according to the post office.

The state of delivery can be informed promptly via the online network system by using the acceptance number included in the receipt of the registered mail.

Currency registration

+430 yen (added to the basic rate)

(insured value up to 10,000 yen)

Further, 10 yen is added to each 5,000 yen(up to 500,000 yen)

Ordinary registered mail

+430 yen (added to the basic rate)

(insured value up to 100,000 yen)

Further, 21 yen is added to each 50,000 yen(up to 5 million yen)

Simplified registration

+310 yen (added to the basic rate)

(insured value up to 50,000 yen)

Yu-Mail

Ordinary registered mail

+370 yen (added to the basic shipping fee)

(insured value up to 100,000 yen)

Further, 21 yen is added to each 50,000 yen(up to 5 million yen)

Simplified registration

+310 yen (added to the basic shipping fee)

(insured value up to 50,000 yen)

Upon usage

  1. The amount of insured value declared at the time of dispatch is up to 500,000 yen for currency registration and 5 million yen for ordinary registered mail. However, the value more than the amount of cash (market value for other than cash) contained cannot be declared.
  2. When there is no declaration, the amount of insured value is 10,000 yen for currency registration and 100,000 yen for ordinary registered mail.
  3. Items containing cash (*) must always be sent as currency registration using the currency envelope (sold in 21 yen). (Postal items exceeding the size of the currency envelope sold at the counter can also be sent as currency registration without using the currency envelope.) For further information, please contact the post office near you.

    • Cash means legal-tender money bills and coins in Japan, and does not include foreign money bills and old coins.
  4. Please always send valuables stipulated in general conditions such as gold, silver and diamond as ordinary registered mail.

Can articles and letters be enclosed in currency registration item together with cash?

Yes, they can be enclosed.
Optional service of currency registration can be attached to standard size/nonstandard size postal items to be sent with articles of respective sizes and letters enclosed.
You cannot enclose cash in Yu-Pack parcels.

Can coins also be sent as registered currency?

You can send Japanese coins.

You cannot send only foreign coins.

Should cash vouchers such as gift certificates and prepaid cards be sent as registered currency?

Cash vouchers cannot be sent as registered currency
They can be sent by enclosing together with cash. It will be the total of cash and the value of gift certificates/prepaid cards.

Please send as ordinary registered mail or simplified registration under normal conditions.

I want to send a congratulatory gift of money in a ceremonial envelope, but it does not fit inside a currency registration envelope. What shall I do?

Please use the large-sized envelope for currency registration (21 yen).

Can acceptance-recorded mail be applied to registered mail?

Although it cannot be applied, the acceptance is recorded similarly to acceptance-recorded mail.

The service can be applied only to ordinary registered mail items deposited within 1 year.
A charge of 430 yen will be necessary.

By what time shall I deposit a test application to be sent to a university in order to make a deadline?

Please use the service to calculate the number of days necessary for delivery.
The rough estimate of what time the application should be deposited to make a deadline can be calculated by subtracting the days required for delivery from the deadline.
Because there is a possibility that the transportation may be delayed due to snowfall, we recommend to send the application early.

I want to confirm whether my test application was received by the university. What shall I do?

It means that the items fall under the same category of special handling.
When sending items deposited simultaneously as specially handled items, they must all be the same category of special handling.
