Exchange of spoiled postcard and stamp

Mistakenly-written postcards can be exchanged.

Mistakenly-written postcards, postal envelopes and specified postage-paid envelopes (Letter Pack envelopes), and unused postage stamps can be exchanged for the following items shown in the table below with prescribed charge.

  • Please note that soiled or damaged postage stamps or postage marks (part showing the postage value of postcard, postal envelope or specified postage-paid envelope [Letter Pack envelope]) are invalid for exchange. For further information, please contact a post office or the Customer Service Center of Japan Post Co., Ltd.

Special postage stamp is a postage stamp issued occasionally for a special purpose such as commemorating events and others. It includes greeting (sticker-type) postage stamps, New Year's postage stamps, donation-added New Year's postage stamps, furusato stamps and frame stamps.

Lottery postcard includes New Year's postcards and Kamo-Mail (summer greeting postcards).

Exchange of EXPACK envelopes into postage stamps and postcards is available free of charge by demanding the return of charge.

Picture postcards and Echo-postcards (postcards with advertisement) are included in other postcards.

Charge-free exchange of New Year's postcard

New Year's lottery postcards and donation-added New Year's postcards that could not be used do to mourning for the passing away of close relatives can be exchanged for ordinary stamps, etc. free of charge.

  • New Year's lottery postcard (including four-surface printing postcards, inkjet printing postcards, postcards with indentations, and postcards with donations)
  • Donation-added New Year's postage stamp

  • Ordinary stamp (including condolence postage stamps)
  • Standard postcard, reply-paid card (other postcards)
  • Postal envelope
  • Specified postage-paid envelope (Letter Pack envelope)
  • Special postage stamps and donation-added New Year's postcards/postage stamps are excluded.

Exchange method

  • Charge-free exchange period is from the start to the finish of the sales of New Year's lottery postcards you have in hand.
  • Exchange is available at all post offices other than contracted post offices.
  • Please notify that you are in mourning, and fill in the name and address of the requester and relationship with the deceased in the request form prepared at the counter.

Items with "#" can be exchanged free of charge only when the illustration is different. Regional New Year's postcards can be exchanged free of charge only when brought to the post office in the region selling the item.

Some of the products may not be issued depending on the year.

Postcard with commercial message (Echo postcard), illustrated consecutively-printed postcard, original New Year postcard, casual New Year's greeting, and printed postcard delivered through the New Year postcard printing service are excluded from the coverage of the free replacement service for mistaken purchase.

Postcards for inkjet printing of photographs cannot be exchanged without charge if the package is already opened.
  • Exchange is available at all post offices other than contracted post offices.
  • Mistakenly purchased lottery postcards that can be exchanged free of charge are limited to unused ones. Soiled or damaged postcards that are inappropriate for resale are ineligible.
  • While the exchange is free of charge, we may charge separately depending on the type of postcard.
  • Charge-free exchange is limited to the cases where lottery postcards issued in the fiscal year in question to other types of lottery postcard issued in the same fiscal year.
